Rascal’s Health Update: More Treats, Less Trouble!

Rascal’s Health Update: Navigating Kidney Care with Love (and "Treats"!)

At Hoomane, we believe in transparency, education, and a whole lot of love—especially when it comes to the pets who’ve pawed their way into our hearts.

Today, we’re sharing a special update about our beloved Mr. Rascal. What started as an eye issue (leading to a Horner’s Syndrome diagnosis) led to routine health checks… which uncovered early-stage kidney disease.

The Test Results Are In:

Rascal's recent urine test confirmed what his blood work had hinted at: he’s been diagnosed with IRIS Stage 2 kidney disease.

But before you panic—there’s actually some great news in all of this!

While Rascal’s kidneys are having a tough time concentrating his urine (a key sign of kidney disease), the test showed no infection, no crystals, and no blood. That’s a big win—and it means we’ve caught this early enough to really make a difference with the right care.

The Prescription for Purrs: A Kidney-Friendly Diet!

When it comes to managing kidney disease, nutrition is everything. While there’s no cure, a kidney care diet can slow the progression and keep our fur babies happy and comfortable.

We’ve started Rascal on Hill's k/d dry food – fish flavour, and guess what? He actually likes it!

Okay, maybe "likes it" is an understatement. We got creative… By pretending it’s treats, Rascal now begs for his special food! We even repurposed old Temptations treat bags and stashed them on every floor of the house. Now, no matter where Rascal is, there’s a “treat” nearby when hunger strikes.

Sneaky Feeding Tip: Mix & Mingle!

Rascal’s still a treat fiend (some things never change), so we’ve been mixing a few actual treats into the k/d food. This little trick keeps him curious and munching on the kidney-friendly stuff with zero fuss.

One challenge? Our other cats also love the k/d food! Since it’s prescription-only and not suitable for healthy cats to eat regularly (plus it costs about $100 for 3.85kg), we’ve had to get strategic and not turn it into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Still—it's worth every penny. A prescription kidney diet is the #1 way to support long-term kidney health and help Rascal feel his best.

But What About Treats & Other Foods?

Yes, Rascal can still enjoy the occasional regular treat or nibble of regular cat food. The key is balance—and making sure he keeps eating.

Appetite loss is common with kidney disease, so we’re honestly just thrilled that he’s not only eating... he’s loving his new diet.

Final Thoughts

Rascal is doing amazingly well so far, and we’re proud of the fun, creative ways we’ve helped him adjust. Kidney disease doesn’t mean the end of fun—it just means getting a little smarter (and sneakier!) with how we care.
